Herbal body wrap
At this chic midtown spot, technician Katya Goidayeva (who has worked at various spas for nearly ten years), soothed away my anxiety with a body wrap. She massaged organic lavender cream into almost every inch of my skin and proceeded to cover my body in layers of lavender-scented sheets and thermal blankets. $95
Best part: While I tend to be claustrophobic, I spent 20 minutes snoozing in my wrap without feeling suffocated; plus, a knot-busting massage was a surprise treat.
Why it’s worth it: The lavender scent, soothing music and encompassing warmth left me completely relaxed—so much so that the feeling stayed with me throughout a busy workday.—Elizabeth Denton
Mention TONY when booking or at time of appointment for 20 percent off all treatments through Feb 29, 2012.

New York Spas Now Rub Crushed Gemstones on Patrons in New Facial Treatments
Gemstones are the hot new ingredient in spa treatments popping up around the city. Apparently emeralds, rubies, pearls, and even gold plump, lift, brighten, purify, what have you (or so they say). Lastly, Dorit Baxter Day Spa uses pure pearls smashed into a paste to exfoliate. "Pearls are also known to contain amino acids, vitamin B complex, and calcium," says Baxter, "and they prevent dark spots on the skin by slowing down the growth of melanin."
Natural Pearl Exfoliating Facial, $120, Dorit Baxter Day Spa, 45–47 W. 57th St.; 212-371-4542.

Fewer Wrinkles. Plenty of Worries.
BEAUTY favors the young. But Dorit Baxter, who's owned beauty businesses in Midtown Manhattan for nearly 30 years, says there are good things about reaching 60. "You learn to survive bad times," she said. "You develop confidence you'll come up with something to pull you through."
The recession of the late 1980s was her first. She owned a skin care salon, and in the beginning didn't know what hit her. "My clients were what they used to call yuppies," Ms. Baxter said. "They were disappearing, the money was shrinking and I didn't understand. I thought it was me. And then I saw stories about investment bankers driving cabs and I knew I was in trouble. I said, 'I need a new concept.' " Read More...

The Face; Terms of Enhancement
Brighteners: The better makeup foundations, creams and powders have light-diffusing particles to make your complexion ''bright.'' Skin-care products -- creams and serums -- have ingredients to inhibit oxidation. When you bite into an apple, it turns brown as it oxidizes. Oxidation causes your skin to be brown in spots, too, so anything that acts as a tyrosinase inhibitor, like Arbutin, means it prevents browning on your skin. And if you see any ingredient that looks like glycyrrhiza glabra, that also lightens/brightens skin. In plain English, it's licorice, used by Asians for thousands of years as a skin whitener. Kojic acid is a lightener and, hence, a brightener too. Dorit Baxter's skin brightening gel contains kojic acid. Along with hydroquinone, it's part of the family of tyrosinase inhibitors. Use too much and you turn into Michael Jackson.

Do You Suffer From 'Tech Neck'?
Is your Treo making your fingers ache and your face break out with zits? The city's high-end spas are selling fixes for such ailments as "BlackBerry thumb," "tech neck,'' and "cell-phone clog.'' "These are repetitive-stress injuries that people used to get in their fifties and sixties; now they are afflicted in their twenties and thirties,'' says Dr. Thomas Scilaris, an Upper East Side orthopedic surgeon. Dorit Baxter spa on West 57th Street offers "Tech Neck" and "Tech Hand" treatments, recommended weekly at $59 per half-hour for each, which combine hot compresses and acupressure to relieve inflammation and "pins and needles."

Best Emergency Backrub - 2009

When we were working a midtown office job, we naturally had neck and back problems. Not spa people, we first availed ourselves of little Chinese storefronts because they were cheap and didn't require advance booking. These gave relief, but only for a few days. We eventually deduced that you get what you pay for, and collected recommendations for an upgrade—even to (it had come to that) a spa. We felt awkward going into Dorit Baxter New York Day Spa—which, on our first visit, was treating a bridal party, some of whom lounged in white robes, reading women's magazines and sipping lemon water in the posh waiting area. But we got a table in a minute, and when the masseuse began patiently kneading our kinked shoulders, all our reservations vanished, as did the aches we'd been having for weeks. One half-hour Swedish massage ($55) and one full-hour deep-tissue massage ($89) fixed us for months. We can't speak to the bikini waxing or facials, or their suitability as an upscale party favor, but if you have typist's torso, Dorit Baxter does the job. And on a walk-in basis.
